Jewish Amsterdam
A walk around the Jewish District and into the Plantage area of central Amsterdam. This tour takes in all the important sights of Jewish history in the centre of what is still today affectionately called ‘Mokum’ – or ‘the place’ in Yiddish.
For centuries Amsterdam was a safe haven for Jews escaping persecution in Portugal, Spain or Eastern Europe. This unique blending of Sephardi and Ashkenazi traditions has left an irremovable impression on Amsterdam, despite the terrors of the Holocaust. We shall show you how Dutch tolerance applied to different religions, how the Jewish District has changed and how it survived the Nazis. The 2.5 hour tour finishes at the Jewish Museum of Amsterdam, which may be optionally included on the tour.
